2D As-Built Drawings vs. 3D Revit Models: Which Should You Order?
A 3D model is not automatically a better purchase than a 2D drawing. It is a different deliverable, and the right choice depends on what your project team plans to do next.
Before selecting a package, ask the receiving architect, designer, or drafter one question: which files do you want to start with?
Use 2D drawings when the drawing is the deliverable
A PDF floor plan is straightforward to review and share. An editable CAD drawing serves a different purpose when a team needs to work with the linework in compatible software. Do not assume a PDF and a DWG are interchangeable simply because they can show the same layout.
For an initial layout discussion or a project whose team works primarily in 2D, a defined drawing package may be the appropriate choice. Specify the dimensions, views, and details needed rather than choosing solely by file extension.
Choose a Revit model for a Revit-based workflow
An authored Revit model can be appropriate when the receiving team plans to continue its work in Revit. Confirm which building elements will be modeled, the required detail, software compatibility, and how supplied or uncertain information will be identified.
A point cloud is separate reference data. Autodesk supports linking RCP and RCS point clouds into a Revit project; linking those measurements does not itself create editable building elements. 1 2
Match the package to the next step
Spot On Measure's published residential packages are organized as follows:
Capture: PDF floor plans, square-footage estimates, room dimensions, and ceiling heights.
Create: Capture deliverables, plus a point-cloud file in the agreed format, 2D DWG files, and window measurements.
Construct: Create deliverables, plus exterior building elevation drawings and a Revit model. 3
Consult the current pricing page and written project scope for the applicable details. Roof plans, concealed systems, and specialized documentation should not be assumed to be included simply because a model is being prepared.
Consider scan-only delivery when your team does the modeling
A team with its own drafting or modeling workflow may prefer a registered point cloud rather than paying for another party to create the same base. Ask the team to confirm format, coverage, and coordination requirements before booking.
Conversely, do not order raw data expecting a finished set of drawings. Identify who will turn the measurements into the final working files and what review is included in that assignment.
Avoid the most expensive mismatch
The wrong file can be inconvenient even when the capture itself is useful. Confirm the end user, software, scope, and intended use first. Additional dimensionality does not make a model permit-ready, fabrication-ready, or structurally verified by default.
Ready to choose? Compare current packages or send Spot On Measure your designer's file requirements. Start with the workflow, then select the deliverables that support it.
