3D Tours vs. Laser Scanning: Why We Choose FARO for As-Built Plans
For a remodel or addition, useful scan data starts with measured existing conditions. Spot On Measure uses FARO laser scanning to support as-built floor plans, CAD drawings, Revit models, and point cloud deliverables, according to your project scope.
We chose the FARO Focus Premium 70 for a service centered on building measurements and documentation. If your next step involves a designer, architect, or contractor working from the existing home, that is the focus of our scanning service.
Why we choose FARO for as-built documentation
Our goal is to give your project team a useful record of the building as it exists. FARO scanning supports that work by capturing visible surfaces from multiple positions, creating a detailed reference for the features included in your scope.
Building geometry: Document accessible wall locations, openings, ceiling heights, and room relationships that matter to your project.
Useful deliverables: Scope the work around the PDF plans, DWG drawings, Revit model, or point cloud files your team needs.
A measurement workflow: Align and review the captured data before using it as a reference for drawings or models.
For a homeowner preparing to remodel, the value is having measured building information in a form the design team can use.
FARO Focus Premium 70: the published measurement specifications
The manufacturer’s specifications for the Focus Premium 70 list:
3D accuracy: 2 mm at 10 m, approximately 0.08 in at 32.8 ft.
3D accuracy at a longer distance: 3.5 mm at 25 m.
Separate ranging-error specification: ±1 mm.
These specifications are a strong reason we use FARO for detailed building capture. Source: FARO Focus Premium 70/150/350 brochure, page 3, revised May 24, 2023.
How does Matterport Pro3 compare?
Matterport publishes a Pro3 depth-accuracy specification of ±20 mm at 10 m, approximately ±0.79 in at 32.8 ft. Its support documentation defines that figure as a single depth measurement under horizontal test conditions. See the Pro3 specifications and measurement definition.
These are different manufacturer-defined hardware metrics, not a direct test of finished drawings. FARO describes its accuracy figures as standard deviations after warm-up within operating temperature. Its ranging-error figure is separate from overall 3D accuracy. Coverage, registration, site conditions, and drafting also affect the finished result.
How this differs from ordering a virtual tour
A virtual tour lets someone explore a property onscreen. LiDAR is a technology for measuring distance with laser light. Matterport Pro3 also uses LiDAR and offers E57 point cloud exports, so the distinction is not simply “tour camera versus laser.”
For a remodel, ask what measured information and files will reach your design team. A tour link alone does not define the drawings, model detail, or scan-data deliverables included. Spot On Measure’s service is built around FARO capture and the documentation your project requires.
From FARO scan data to usable plans
Scans from different positions are aligned and reviewed before they become a reference for drafting. FARO SCENE supports scan processing, registration, and review. A point cloud and an editable Revit model are different deliverables; your selected scope identifies which files will be prepared.
Before scanning, tell us which areas matter most, what software your team uses, and whether you need floor plans, additional drawings, a model, or scan data. That helps us plan the capture around the work you intend to do.
Common questions
Do I need a Revit model for every remodel?
No. PDF plans or DWG drawings may be appropriate when your team needs 2D documentation. A Revit model may be useful when the project team works in Revit. We can help define the deliverables around those requirements.
Does the ±1 mm specification guarantee ±1 mm plans?
No. It describes one scanner characteristic. Finished documentation depends on the complete workflow and agreed scope. Critical dimensions should be verified before construction, fabrication, or material ordering.
